Sudoku meaning
What the word Sudoku actually means — and why the name fits the puzzle so well.
The short answer
Sudoku comes from Japanese. It is an abbreviation of sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru (数字は独身に限る) — often translated as “the digits must remain single” or “digits are limited to one occurrence.” The name points at the core rule: each digit appears only once in a row, column or box.
Breaking down the phrase
- Sūji (数字) — numerals / digits.
- Dokushin (独身) — single / unmarried; here, “appearing alone.”
- Kagiru (限る) — to limit / restrict.
So the “meaning of Sudoku” is not “math puzzle.” It is “unique digits.” That is why replacing 1–9 with letters still works — uniqueness is the point.
History in brief
Number-place grids ran in US magazines in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, the Japanese publisher Nikoli refined and named the modern Sudoku. Worldwide newspaper popularity exploded in the mid-2000s. Today “Sudoku” is the global brand for the classic 9×9 logic grid and its smaller cousins.
